Cover your seeds with earthworm castings to make it easy for seeds to sprout and grow up out of the soil. It will act as a bit of fertilizer, and stop the soil from crusting over and preventing the seed from growing.
Broccoli started from seed early indoors is likely to mature faster, but direct sowing outdoors can bolster your crop and extend your harvest season, while saving the effort of transplanting.
