Growing Strawberries with Niles

Most varieties grow runners freely and can multiply each growing season. Niles Kinerk, owner of Gurney’s, shows how he manages new growth in his strawberry patch with layers of straw.

Advice from Niles

  • Giving strawberries space between plants for more sunlight will give you more, larger berries, compared to crowded, densely growing plants. Strawberries will be more productive on their new first-year runners, compared to the older plants.  
  • At the beginning of the season (early March in Ohio in this video), Niles uses thick layers of straw to cover up the rows that he harvested from the year before, leaving the new runners exposed so they can grow and produce berries for the season. Putting straw on your strawberry rows helps keep them clean, hold moisture, and controls weeds. The important thing is to let the runners renew themselves in a different row each year.
