Advice from Niles

Carrots have a small seed, so you want to plant them only ¼ inch deep. Cover the seeds with earthworm castings instead of soil – it’s a fail-proof method. Tamp down the seeds and earthworm castings for good seed to soil contact.
Covering your seeds with earthworm castings makes it easy for seeds to sprout and grow up out of the soil. It will act as a bit of fertilizer, and stop the soil from crusting over and preventing the seed from growing.
