Salad Greens Seeds from Gurney's

Choosing the Right Salad Mix Seeds

Greens can be grown in the garden, raised beds, pots, containers and Grow Tubs. They require full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily) and well-drained soil. When selecting salad greens seeds note their growing requirements. Many greens, including lettuce, spinach, mustard and collard greens prefer the cool weather and perform best in the spring and fall gardens. While kale can be planted in the spring or summer, it sweetens in cooler weather. Chard can be harvested in the summer months. For a continual harvest, select a variety of greens.

Getting Started with Salad Seeds

Salad greens can be ready in a hurry --sometimes as soon as 30 days after planting, especially if harvested at the baby leaf stage. If you want to harvest greens for months, sow seeds every few weeks during the springtime and again in late summer.

How do you grow salad greens seeds

Salad greens are some of the easiest vegetables to grow in the home garden and in containers. Most require little care, just about an inch of water weekly during the growing season.

When should you plant salad greens seeds

Most salad greens seeds are directly sown into the garden in the springtime when the soil can be worked and again in late summer, for a fall harvest. Sometimes gardeners will start spinach seed indoors in the spring and transplant it to the garden. For individual varieties, check the planting times on the seed packet.

How deep do you plant salad seeds

Salad seeds are usually sown very shallowly --no more than 1/2- inch deep. The spacing and depth for different varieties is listed on the salad greens seed packets.

How to plant salad greens seed tapes

Seed tapes are an easy way to plant salad mix seeds and greens seed because you don't have to worry about over or under seeding the tiny salad greens seed. Just place the seed tape in the garden on loose, well-drained soil and water.

How to harvest salad greens

Salad greens can be harvested at the baby leaf stage or allowed to grow to the mature stage. Some greens are cut and come again --meaning that you harvest the larger leaves and allow the others to keep growing before harvesting them. When harvesting greens, use scissors or a knife to cut off the leaves, as it minimizes damage to the leaves.

Do salad greens come back every year

Most gardeners treat lettuce and other greens as annuals. However, if lettuce is allowed to bolt and go to seed, it will reseed itself.
