Planting Beet Seeds with Niles
Niles Kinerk, owner of Gurney’s Seed & Nursery Co., shows you his tried-and-true method for planting beet seeds, using earthworm castings for the best results.
Advice from Niles
- Beet seeds need to be planted about ½ and inch deep – deeper than lettuce and carrots. Cover seeds with earthworm castings. It helps keep the soil loose on top, and acts as a soil fertilizer. Tamp down the seeds and earthworm castings for good seed to soil contact to encourage healthy growth.
- Thinning beet seedlings is well worth the time. Spacing beets with 2-3 inches on either side will help you grow larger beets, faster.
- UnBEETable™ is a Gurney’s exclusive variety selected for fast growth, vigor, and great flavor. Red Titan is a Gurney’s Choice winner—the red beet for people who don’t like beets!
