Potatoes, red beets, carrots and onions--that is, root crops--need a special formula to help them grow. Other veggie fertilizers won't work as well, since these root vegetables need extra phosphorus and potassium, but much less nitrogen, which can cause poor crops and, in the case of potatoes, high levels of potentially toxic glycoalkaloids. Fortunately, we created this all-natural formula with root vegetables in mind. In our garden trials, plants fed with Root Crops Alive!™ produced 57% more potatoes by weight! This fertilizer will help improve the thickness of each stem so that the roots grow full and large, reduce water loss through leaves so plants hold up to dry spells, and act as an antidote to excess nitrogen. It also helps the plants resist disease. Try it when planting garlic, onions, beets, carrots, potatoes and turnips.

• Side-dressing: make 1 inch deep furrow near base of each plant and pour a pencil thick line of fertilizer into the furrow.
