Sum and Substance Hosta

Leaves up to 20 Inches Long!

This 2004 Hosta of the Year Award winner is one of the largest hosta cultivars available! Its immense, glossy, textured leaves grow up to 20 in. long and range in hues from light green to chartreuse to gold. Grows 2-3 ft. tall with a 3-5 ft. spread. Lavender flowers open above the foliage in August and attract hummingbirds. Resists slugs. Hostas, like Sum and Substance, add color and texture to shaded areas. These easy-care perennials are perfect for growing under deciduous trees, along shaded walkways and even as ground cover. Grow in full to partial shade. Bareroot. Zones 3-8.

  • Depth: Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots without bending them. Plant with the tip of the crown just below or at ground level.

  • Foliage: Large, broad, light green leaves that are corrugated and glossy, givng them good slug resistance.
  • Blooms: Mid to late summer.

  • Flower Form: Bell-shaped purple flowers on scapes.
  • Soil Requirements: Tolerant of a wide range of soils, but best if evenly moist and well-drained.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Pruning: After flowering, remove spent flower stems to keep the plants tidy.
  • Comments: One of the easiest plants to grow and perfect for shade. The light green foliage adds a touch of brightness to a dark, shaded landscape. Large, broad leaves are a great textural contrast to other shade-loving plants like Ferns, Astilbe, and Hakonechloa. Purple flowers that bloom on long scapes above the foliage are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.
