This quick-vining plant is covered with stunning tubular-shaped, red and gold blooms all summer long and well into the fall. Major Wheeler is a fast grower that quickly reaches 6-10 ft. in length and is unbelievably hardy. Resistant to the mildew that seems to plague other varieties. Likes partial shade in most regions except the far north, where it enjoys full sun.Potted. Zones 4-8.

Product Details

  • Botanical Name: Lonicera semperivirens 'Major Wheeler'
  • Height: 6 - 10 feet
  • Spacing: 6 - 10 feet
  • Depth: Set plant at the same level it is growing at in the container, firm soil and water thoroughly.
  • Spread: 5 - 10 feet
  • Light Required: Full sun to partial shade. Likes partial shade in most regions except the far north, where it can enjoy full sun.
  • Color: Red and gold blossoms.
  • Foliage: The leaves are borne in opposite pairs on the stems. Short, oblong to heart-shaped, medium green in color.
  • Blooms: Late Spring to Fall.
  • Fruit: Small red berries.
  • Zone: 4 - 9
  • Form: Deciduous woody vine - evergreen in the south.
  • Flower Form: Small tubular or funnel shaped flowers. No fragrance.
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing vine.
  • Pruning: Prune to shape in late Fall. after flowering. Pruning in late Winter or early Spring will remove flowers.
  • Comments: Fast vining plant perfect for growing over a fence post, trellis or arbor. This variety blooms all Summer and into Fall where most varieties only bloom for a few weeks. This variety also does not seem to be bothered by mildew which can plague other varieties.
