Franklin Tree

Named in Honor of Benjamin Franklin


Discovered in 1765 by an American botanist, the Franklin Tree was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin! Ranging in height from about 10-25 ft. when mature, its glossy, dark green foliage fades into gorgeous shades of orange, red and purple in the fall but not before surprising you with bright-white, sweetly perfumed, late-summer blooms. Bareroot. Zones 6-8, can be grown in a protected area in Zone 5.

  • Botanical Name: Franklinia alatamaha
  • Height: 10-25 feet
  • Spacing: 12-15 feet
  • Depth: Place the tree in the hole at the same level it was grown by the nursery, where the roots start and the top shoots begin. A line may be noticeable as to where the soil level was when it was growing in the ground. Spread the roots evenly. Gently work the soil around the roots and water thoroughly
  • Spread: 6-15 feet
  • Sun/Shade: Full Sun to Partial Shade.
  • Foliage: Attractive, glossy, dark green foliage. Leaves are narrow and oblong, up to 5-6 inches long. Deciduous. Beautiful fall color in shades of orange, red, and purple.
  • Blooms: Late summer.
  • Fruit: Rounded fruit grows up to 1 inch in diameter. It is not particularly ornamental.
  • Flower Form: The 3-inch, bright white, five-petaled flowers have a pretty center boss of sunny yellow stamens, and perfume the air with their sweet fragrance.
  • Soil Requirements: Medium moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. Good drainage is essential. Prefers acid soil.
  • Pruning: Remove dead, weak, and limbs that rub together.
  • Comments: Named in Honor of Benjamin Franklin.
