Attracts Butterflies, Not Deer!

With a unique form and red or yellow color, this exotic plant lures butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Each 24-36 in. stem features a "crown" of large bell-shaped blooms in mid to late spring. Prefers full sun. Zones 3-8. 20-22 cm bulbs.

  • Botanical Name: Fritillaria imperialis rubra
  • Height: 36 - 48 inches.
  • Spacing: 12 inches.
  • Depth: 8 inches deep and tilted slightly so the hole in the bulb does not fill with water.
  • Spread: 12 inches.
  • Light Required: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Color: Burnt orange-red flowers with delicate veining.
  • Foliage: Green foliage.
  • Blooms: Mid-spring for 1 - 3 weeks.
  • Zone: 4 - 8
  • Form: Bulb
  • Flower Form: Topped with a crown veined in rich gold.
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained soil.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate. Should grow to full height and bloom first season.
  • Pruning: Allow the foliage to die down naturally. Leaves provide nourishment for the bulbs to produce future growth and blooming.
  • Size: 20-22 cm bulb
  • Comments: They are most effective in groups of three or more for 3 - 5 foot area. Needs winter protection. Remove flowers as they fade. Leave foliage intact until it dies back naturally. Feed with a 5-10-5 fertilizer in the fall and as growth emerges in the spring. The strong smell of the bulbs does repel moles and other burrowing animals but the customer should not rely on this alone.
