Grape tomatoes are bite-sized fruits that are favorites for salads and snacking. A subset of cherry tomato, they get their name from their oblong shape that’s similar to a grape. Smaller than cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes have thicker skins, a meatier texture and a lower water content. Choosing the Right Type of Grape Tomatoes
When selecting grape tomatoes to grow, color and flavor are often top considerations. Grape tomatoes come in various colors and tend to be more savory. Their thicker skins also give them a slightly longer shelf life.
Most grape tomato plants grow in zones 3-9. However, some varieties may grow in zone 10, and some may not be suitable for zone 3.
It can also be helpful to look at disease resistance, keeping in mind the particular conditions and pests prevalent in your zone.
Finally, like other tomato varieties, grape tomatoes can be determinate or indeterminate plants. While indeterminate grape tomato plants produce fruits over a long harvest season, the plants can grow quite large and require staking.
