Fruitful Harvest
Introduced in the 1930s, the Pixwell Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa 'Pixwell') produces large green berries that ripen to a pale pink in mid-summer. This easy-care, vigorous shrub is self-pollinating and grows to a height of 4 – 5 feet. It begins fruiting as early as the second year after planting, with mature plants yielding 4 – 6 quarts of berries per season. These tart berries are perfect for pies, preserves, or can be enjoyed fresh when fully ripe.
Attractive Foliage & Wildlife Benefits
The Pixwell Gooseberry offers beauty beyond its fruit. Its deep green, glossy leaves turn a rich burgundy in the fall, adding striking seasonal color to your landscape. The flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, while the plant’s deer resistance ensures it stays protected from browsing animals. With a tidy, low-maintenance growth habit, Pixwell makes an excellent fruiting hedge or a standout feature in any edible garden.
Growing Conditions & Adaptability
This hardy shrub thrives in partial shade and adapts well to a range of soil types, though it prefers moist, well-drained soil. Pixwell is both drought-tolerant and cold-hardy, thriving in planting zones 3 – 6.
