Start Genovese basil seeds indoors or after the last frost of spring for the best results.
- What Is Genovese Basil?
Originating in the Genoa area of Italy, Genovese Basil is known for its large, sweet leaves, distinct aroma and large size. Genovese Basil plants usually grow 2-3 feet tall, and its large, slightly crinkled leaves can often grow 3 inches long. A favorite for making pesto, this herb is also used to flavor sauces, soups and other Italian-inspired recipes.
While many varieties of basil are available, gardeners buy Genovese Basil for its large yields, sweet flavor and ease of growing. Genovese Basil is one of the most popular and most recognizable basil varieties available. In most areas of the country, Genovese Basil is grown as an annual herb in the garden or containers. Many gourmets like to grow Genovese Basil in a container or Grow Tub near the home so it's easy to snip a few basil leaves for cooking.
- How Do You Grow Genovese Basil From Seed?
Genovese Basil is an easy herb to grow from seed. Because basil is a warm weather plant, many gardeners start basil seed indoors and then transplant basil plants to the garden when the weather warms.
Before starting Genovese Basil seed indoors, make sure you have the seed-starting supplies you need, including grow lights, planting media and containers. Genovese basil seed germinates best with the soil or growing media is at least 70 degrees F. Basil seeds should be sown 1/8 inch deep and watered. Basil seeds usually germinate in 5-7 days.
When transplanting Genovese Basil seedlings outdoors, wait until soil temperature is at least 60 degrees and air temperatures are above 50 degrees. Space Genovese Basil plants about 18 inches apart. Basil plants grow best in full sun (6 or more hours of direct sunlight daily) and well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
- How Do You Harvest Genovese Basil?
Once the basil plant is established and about 8 inches tall, you can start harvesting Genovese Basil leaves. Pinch leaves as needed. To harvest whole stems, cut the stem just above a pair of leaves. This encourages new growth. If flower buds form, pinch them off.
- What Is British Genovese Basil Used For?
Because Genovese Basil produces large yields and has large leaves, it's a favorite for making into pesto. Genovese Basil has a long harvest period making it a favorite for Italian-inspired recipes that call for fresh basil as well as salads, including Caprese salad.
Once gardeners start growing and using Genovese Basil, they often want to try growing and using other herbs. Be sure to check out Gurney's other herb plants and seeds.
