Hoosier Stew
This month’s recipe has roots in Gurney’s history, a nod to our owner Niles Kinerk’s childhood days on a farm in Indiana. A regional staple in the Hoosier State, Hoosier Stew is a comforting, one-pot dish made with green beans, tender potatoes and savory sausage. With homegrown garden staples as the hero, this filling stew brings together the rich flavors of your summer harvest with the cozy feel of wintertime.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1½ lbs. potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks
- 1 lb. smoked sausage or kielbasa, sliced into rounds
- 1 medium (yellow) onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups chicken broth or water
- 1 tbsp butter or olive oil
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Wash and trim the green beans, chop the onion and potatoes, and slice the sausage into bite-sized rounds.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt butter (or heat oil) over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook until lightly browned. Add onion and garlic; sauté until fragrant and translucent.
- Stir in potatoes and green beans. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Pour in the chicken broth or water—just enough to cover the ingredients. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until potatoes and green beans are tender.
- Adjust seasoning to taste and ladle into bowls. Enjoy with a slice of crusty bread or cornbread for a true Hoosier-style meal!
