A recently cultivated variety, Gem is a European dessert pear with a sweet, mildly aromatic flavor that’s a bit spicier than Bartlett. The medium- to large-sized, slightly globular fruits have smooth, yellow-green skin blushed with red and crisp, off-white flesh that doesn’t discolor when sliced. While these pears are delicious plucked right off the tree, keeping them in cool storage for 3-6 weeks deepens their ripeness and flavor; which eventually mellows out to a melting, dessert pear quality. Gem has an exceptionally long storage window and will last up to 5 months in cold storage—even remaining free of brown discoloration!

Gem trees are vigorous and productive, with significantly improved fire blight resistance compared to Bartlett, though they remain moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, scab and pear psylla. Thinning enhances fruit size significantly. For best yields, pair with a pollinator. Requires approximately 600-800 chill hours or more. Zones 4-8.
