Product Description
- Intensely flavorful sweet-tart tang
- Slightly oblate fruits in shades of russet, gold and green
- Stores well for months
- One of the most popular English dessert apples
- Winter-hardy trees begin bearing at a young age
An English heirloom dating back to the 1700s, Ashmead’s Kernel is celebrated as one of the finest-flavored apples ever grown! This variety produces small to medium fruits with distinctive green-gold-russet skin and yellow flesh that’s aromatic, crisp and richly sweet-tart. Ripening in fall just after Red Delicious, this dessert apple can be enjoyed fresh or makes a sharp addition to ciders or sauces. Picked early, the flavor is lively and tangy, then mellows beautifully after a few weeks in cold storage—and keeps well for 3-4 months. A winter-hardy variety, it begins bearing at a young age, with the best yields occurring with cross pollination. It resists powdery mildew and has moderately good resistance to apple scab. Requires 800-1000 chill hours. Zones 5-9.
