Low-maintenance shrub produces red berries in late summer that attract birds—and the berries will often stay on the shrub through fall and winter. Growing 6-8 ft. tall with lustrous, dark green foliage, it's an great deciduous shrub for planting in groups or as a hedge. For berry production, a male pollinator (Southern Gentleman) must be planted near a female winterberry (Winter Red). Native to the eastern United States, this shrub performs well in moist soils and near streams and ponds. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Deer tend to avoid. Zones 3-9.
