Ruby Spice Summersweet

Very fragrant and easy to grow.

Produces upright spires of densely packed, very fragrant flowers from June to August. Easy to grow; extremely tolerant of a wide range of conditions including wet soils. Very pest and disease resistant. Ruby Spice is "Southern Tough!" 5-6 ft. tall at maturity. Zones 6-9.

  • Botanical Name: Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice'
  • Height: 5 - 6 feet.
  • Spacing: 5 - 6 feet.
  • Depth: Plant at the same level as it is in the pot.
  • Spread: 5 - 6 feet.
  • Light Required: Full sun to partial shade. Prefers part shade and consistently moist, acidic, sandy soils. Soils should not be allowed to dry out.
  • Color: Rich rose-pink.
  • Foliage: Simple, obovate with serrated margins, 1 1/2 inch - 4 inch long and up to 2 inch wide. Mid-green turning a rich golden-brown in the Fall.
  • Blooms: Mid to late Summer.
  • Zone: 6 - 9.
  • Form: Deciduous woody shrub.
  • Flower Form: Masses of tiny star-like flowers on plump 2 inch - 4 inch terminal panicles.
  • Soil Requirements: Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including wet soils.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate.
  • Pruning: Prune to maintain size after flowering. Prune if needed in late winter.
