Product Details

  • Botanical Name: Lycopersicon lycopersicum 'Paul Robeson'
  • Height: 5- 8 feet, Indeterminate
  • Spacing: 2 - 4 feet.
  • Depth: 1/4 inch for seeds. When transplanting, set the plant deep, up to the first true leaves, by digging a deep hole or trench.
  • Spread: 2 - 4 feet.
  • Light Required: Full sun
  • Pollinator: Self pollinating.
  • Yield: High-yielding
  • Foliage: Green foliage.
  • Fruit: 7-10 oz. brick-black colored, beefsteak type fruit.
  • Days To Maturity: 85 days from transplant.
  • Zone: 3 - 9 annual
  • Germination: 7-10 days.
  • Form: Vining
  • Flower Form: Small yellow flowers.
  • Soil Requirements: Rich, well-drained soil.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate.
  • Seed Count: Approximately 30 seeds per packet.
  • Pruning: Prune by cutting out suckers (auxiliary shoots between the stems and the leaves) to produce larger fruit. Fruit also ripens earlier since the sun can reach it more easily.
  • Comments: Smoky, sweet flavor. Has a cult following amongst seed savers. Flavor most closely relates to Black Krim. Brick-black color with dark green shoulders. Fruits are often bi-lobed. Russian heirloom lovingly named in the honor of a famous singer/performance artist and equal rights advocate, Paul Robeson.

Plants will be shipped at the proper planting time for your area of the country using the shipping timeframes outlined below. We continually monitor weather conditions for extreme hot or cold and adjust shipping schedules as needed. Due to hot weather conditions, we are unable to ship most plant items in July and August.
