  • Botanical Name: Nyssa sylvatica
  • Height: 30 - 50 feet.
  • Spacing: 20 - 30 feet.
  • Depth: Plant so the stain on the roots are at soil level. Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Spread: 20 - 30 feet.
  • Light Required: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Foliage: Glossy, dark green Summer leaves, turning to shades of red, scarlet, orange, yellow and purple in Fall.
  • Blooms: Spring.
  • Fruit: The fruit is round, dark blue, and clustered on stalks up to 1 1/2" long.- Birds loved it. It does not produce the gumballs that the sweet gum produces.
  • Zone: 4 - 9.
  • Form: Deciduous. Upright, oval, irregularly shaped canopy.
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, acidic soil.
  • Growth Rate: Medium growth rate.
  • Comments: Known for it's brilliant Fall colors - glossy, dark green Summer leaves put on a show in Fall, turning shades of red, scarlet, orange, yellow and purple - often all colors showing on the same branch. Native tree to the entire Eastern United States. Small, blueish-black fruit sometimes appear - the birds love it. Medium growth rate. Upright, oval, irregularly shaped canopy.
