Radish Varieties: Choosing the Right Radish Seeds

Fast-growing radish seeds are the first ready to harvest crop of the season. It's no wonder that radishes often are the first crop that children grow. Simply sow the big radish seeds, then pull out a colorful, crunchy radish a month later. For the mildest flavor, grow radishes in the cool weather of spring or fall.

When selecting radish varieties, decide how you want to use them. The traditional, globe-shaped radishes are a treat for snacking and add color and flavor to raw vegetable trays. Oblong radishes, like the French Breakfast Radish, are favorites for dipping and snacking.

Radish seeds are also used to mark germinating crops such as carrots, beets and lettuce. Radish from seed germinates more quickly than these other crops, so the young radish plants will mark the rows until the other seeds germinate.

How To Plant Radish Seeds

Radish seed can be sown in the garden in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow radish seed about one-half inch deep and about 1-2 inches apart. The rows should be 12-18 inches apart. For convenience, many gardeners like using radish seed tapes.

How To Germinate Radish Seeds

After sowing radish seed, water the soil. Radish from seed germinates in 4-6 days. You may need to thin radish plants so they are 2-3 inches apart.

When To Harvest Radish Seeds

Radishes are often ready for harvest 3-4 weeks after planting. Keep in mind that radishes get spicier as they age, so it's best to taste test a few before harvest. Radishes should also be harvested before they start cracking.

To extend the radish season, sow radish seed every two weeks in the spring and in late summer and early fall.

Radishes can be pulled by hand. Cut the tops and the roots off with a knife.

How To Save Radish Seeds

If you want to save radish seeds, simply let some of them grow and form radish seed pods. Once the pods dry and turn brown, you can harvest the seeds and store them in a cool, dry place.
