Viking Chokeberry
As my grandfather would say, "They don't call 'em chokecherries for nothing". Aronia is bitter but prized for its very high antioxidant levels. Makes delicious, very flavorful, jellies and jams. If you don't use them for jellies and jams, or possibly in baked goods, leave them for the birds! The fruit hangs on the shrub long into fall and early winter which makes them a valuable food for birds when not much else is available. Matures at 5 to 7 feet height. Zones 3-8. Makes a tough and trouble-free edible hedge! Nothing seems to bother it and it grows well in a range of soils. Outstanding bright red and purple fall colors.
