Cold-Hardy, Semi-Dwarf Strain

Tougher than its Southern cousin. Tolerates sub-zero temps; consistently produces loads of brilliant red flowers. Leaves turn scarlet in fall. Grows 7-10 ft. tall with a rounded top. Red-tinged, gray-barked branches are heavy with blooms from mid to late summer. Potted plants. Zones 6-9.

Zones: 6 - 9.
Height: 5 - 10 feet.
Shade Requirement: Full sun.
Germination: Adaptable to many soils so long as they are well drained. Firm and water in well.

Tonto Hardy Crape Myrtle Product Details

Botanical Name: Lagerstroemia indica (lay-ger-STREEM-ia)

Height: 5 - 10 feet.

Spacing: 6 - 10 feet.

Depth: Plant at the same depth as it is planted in the pot.

Spread: 5 - 6 feet.

Sun/Shade: Full sun.

Color: Deep pinkish-red flowers.

Foliage: Medium green, goes to yellow, orange, red in Fall. Deciduous.

Blooms: Mid Summer to late Summer for several weeks.

Fruit: Not important.

Form: Deciduous tree. Upright.

Flower Form: Crinkled petals 6 - 8 inch panicles.

Soil Requirements: Adaptable to many soils so long as they are well-drained.

Growth Rate: Fast growth rate once established.

Seed Count: A very handsome and beautiful all around plant in the landscape. Year round appeal with beautiful vase shaped growth habit. Highly ornamental bark and large profuse flower clusters. Often planted in groups with ground covers beneath. Excellent dwarf variety making it suitable for smaller gardens and corner spots - even containers. Young branches dark red purple becoming a gray brown at maturity. The most hardy of the dwarf varieties developed at the National Arboretum.

Pruning: Prune to remove dead wood and for aesthetics and shape in early Spring while tree is still dormant.

Comments: Trees should flower the first season, but will flower more heavily the 2nd or 3rd year. If tree is potted in zone 6 and 7, place it in an unheated garage or sheltered area outdoors for the Winter. This tree is often grown multi-stemmed, with blooms on upper 1/3 of the plant.
