Blight Resistant, Very Productive

Chinese Chestnut is vigorous, adaptable and productive. Nuts are meaty, crisp and sweet, with a delicate flavor roasted or used in traditional stuffing. Thrives in many types of soil, and grows 40-60 ft. at maturity. Highly resistant to chestnut blight, sets 75-100 pounds of nuts per season. Plant two for pollination. Zones 4-8.

Superior Chinese Chestnut Tree Product Details

Botanical Name: Castanea mollissima

Height: 40' - 60'.

Spacing: 30'- 50'.

Depth: Same as in the nursery.

Spread: 40'.

Sun/Shade: Full sun.

Pollinator: Plant two or more for best pollination.

Yield: 30 - 50 lbs at maturity.

Color: White

Foliage: Shiny green turning to yellow to bronze.

Blooms: June

Fruit: Apple size burrs with bristles; contains up to 3 - 7 nuts.

Form: Rounded.

Flower Form: 4 - 5 panicles. Not showy; catkins, unpleasant odor.

Soil Requirements: Acidic, well-drained, sandy loam soil; pH should be 5.5 - 6.5.

Growth Rate: Slow to medium growth.

Comments: Medium to large, meaty, crisp nuts. Resistant to chestnut blight. Adapts to less than ideal conditions. Plant in groups of 2 or more for proper cross-pollination. Slow to establish but grows quickly once its established. Performs well in hot, dry climates. Responds well to fertilization.
