This stately ornamental is covered in lovely purple blooms in late spring, and a sweet fragrance perfumes the entire area. A hardy variety, it is heat and pollution tolerant and is adaptable to a wide range of soils. Grows 30-50 ft. Prefers full sun. Zones 4-8. 4-5 ft.

Purple Robe Locust Ornamental Tree Product Details

Botanical Name: Robinia pseudoacacia 'Purple Robe'

Height: 30' - 50'.

Spacing: 20' - 35'.

Depth: Set at the same level as it is in the shipping container; firm well and water thoroughly.

Spread: 20' - 35'.

Sun/Shade: Full sun.

Color: Dark purple.

Foliage: Foliage consists of alternate, pinnately compound leaves. Leaves are purple tinted new growth ages to bronze-green and become yellowish in the Fall.

Blooms: Late Spring.

Fruit: Consists of a flat, 2" to 4" brown pod that matures in October and persists into Winter.

Form: Compact, rounded.

Flower Form: Very showy.

Soil Requirements: Clay; sand; loam; acidic; alkaline; well-drained soil.

Growth Rate: Fast growth.

Pruning: Requires light pruning to develop a strong structure. Prune in late Summer to avoid "bleeding".

Comments: This tree has very ornamental and fragrant blooms that bees love. The nectar from this tree makes a wonderful and rare type of honey.
