Pawpaw Product Details

Botanical Name: Asimina triloba; Family: Annonaceae (Custard Apple Family)

Height: 15 - 30 feet.

Spacing: 15 - 20 feet.

Depth: Same as in the nursery.

Spread: 15 - 25 feet.

Sun/Shade: Full sun.

Pollinator: Plant 2 - 3 plants to ensure pollination. Pawpaw trees are not self fertile. Pollen must be transferred to the female flowers of a different Pawpaw tree. The more trees that are planted in a grouping the better pollination, resulting in better fruit produ

Color: Purple flowers.

Foliage: Deep green, drooping, oval leaves, 4 x 12 inches.

Blooms: Spring.

Fruit: Greenish-yellow, almost black when ripe.

Form: Small deciduous tree, rounded.

Flower Form: Tulip-shaped; fragrant.

Soil Requirements: Rich, moist, well-drained, organic, slightly acidic soil. pH of 5.5 - 7.0.

Growth Rate: 2 feet per year.

Comments: Tree is shipped as a #1 plant, 6" - 18" of top growth (growth above the root system). Fruit is 3 - 5 inches with 3 - 7 per cluster. Fruit is soft and yellow. It has a custard-like pulp and banana-like taste. Can be potted. Fruit is high in unsaturated fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Pest and disease free. Foliage turns yellow in the Fall. Self-fruitful but plant two or more for better fruit production. Lives up to 80 years.
