Bright Flowered, Fast Spreading


Colorful early- to late-spring blooms, followed by thick foliage that lasts all season. Great on sloping banks. Compact, 4- to 6-in. plants spread up to 18-in. Prefers full sun; tolerates poor soil if well drained. Space 8-12 in. apart. Zones 4-9. No. 1 bareroot.

  • Botanical Name: Phlox subulata 'Pink Emerald'; Family: Polemoniaceae (Phlox Family).
  • Height: 4 - 6 inches
  • Spacing: 12 - 18 inches.
  • Depth: Plant with the stems of the plant 1/2 inch below the soil surface.
  • Spread: 18 - 24 inches.
  • Sun/Shade: Full sun.
  • Color: Uniform rose-pink blossoms.
  • Foliage: Semi-evergreen, needle-like foliage.
  • Blooms: Early to mid-Spring.
  • Form: Perennial. Prostrate mound.
  • Flower Form: Shear plants halfway back after bloom for more blossoms.
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, gritty soil. Likes slightly alkaline soli.
  • Growth Rate: Rapid growth rate to 12 inches.
  • Size: 1/2 inch.
  • Comments: Water weekly first season and during long prolonged hot, dry periods in subsequent years. Mix peat moss, compost, or well-rotted manure deeply into the soil. Cut the plant back after flowering to encourage dense growth. Good for rock gardens or borders. Excellent Spring color. Also called Moss Pink or Ground Pink. May experience some browning during Winter if in a windy, frosty location. In very cold areas, plants may die back.
