Bears up to 30 bushels of nuts once established. Truly a gourmet
favorite—black walnuts have a rich flavor prized for baking, plus
twice the protein of English walnuts. Trees grow up to 75 ft. tall
with dark green foliage, excellent for providing shade. Dark brown
wood is strong with an attractive grain, providing valuable timber.
Self-pollinating, but plant two or more for top crops. Zones 4-8. Nut trees are not available in AZ, CA, TX.This item ships only in the spring.

Zones: 4 - 8 (-20° F.) Height: 50-75 ft Spacing: at least 8-12 ft apart for groupings, but 30 - 40 ft apart when growing for a specimen tree. Depth: same as nursery Spread: 30-40 ft Sun/Shade: full sun Pollinator: partial self -but requires another black walnut for larger yields Yield: variable Foliage: medium to dark green, oval leaves, compound Fruit: green cased nut often dropping to ground when black
| Comments: Dark brown to grayish black bark. Develops an extensive taproot as it matures and is difficult to transplant. This is a seedling, it is not grafted. Great for baking. Self pollinating. Best planted in groups. Yields up to 30 bushels of nuts once established and they are great for baking. A high value is placed on this tree due to the demand for walnut veneer. Nuts are ready to harvest when you can dent the hull of several nuts. with your thumb. Remove hulls immediately after harvesting to prevent staining. They thrive here. They can be a bit messy and they produce a chemical called Juglone which will kill off all plants within the dripline. I planted it in a pot (Waiting for larger roots to form). I find that nut trees thrive with a nutrient rich formula and I created a soil medium with Soil, Potting Soil, perlite(large and small), vermiculite (large and small), and plenty of worm casting. I am starting to see buds already and I only watered it once.

Black Walnuts Zone4
