Excellent for shady beds! Bronze foliage, crowned with crimson flowers in late summer. Grows 36 in. tall. Best in partial shade. Potted. Zones 3-8.
This plant attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Depth: plant with crown at soil surface
Spread: 18 in
Sun/Shade: partial or full sun
Color: deep red
Foliage: bronze foliage
Blooms: August-September
Comments: Mix generous amounts of peat moss, compost or well rotted manure into the soil. Keep soil moist, not soggy. Mulch to help retain moisture. Cut plants to the ground and mulch when foliage browns in the fall.Cut faded flower stalks to the ground. Foliage is tinged red, stems usually have a bronze cast. Flowers seem to have a luminous color. This variety is a tetraploid (Double the chromosomes) so has larger flowers, thick, erect stems, thick leaf blades and strong roots. Good for borders or along streams or ponds.

Not a easy plant to grow, I was wondering if maybe it would have done better as a houseplant. I had a hard time with it from the day it was planted.

I've planted this bush twice: both arrived looking like they were nearly dead, then died shortly after being planted.
