When i planted it, i placed clam shells around the spot to protect it from over zelous grounds keepers. The shoots were approximately 1 and 2 inches at that point. In about a week I noticed the shell lifted on its side...as i approached, it was the growing leaves which had lifted the shell into the air. After less than a month one plant is 11 inches tall, the others a bit smaller. Friends of mine, knowledgeable in this matter, told me that the plant will recognize air quality by showing a variety of colours on the leaf. I will keep you posted when it is large enough to perform this interesting feat. It is strong and beautiful. Thank you, Gurneys, for this lovely, healthy plant.
