When starting a new lawn, the best thing you can do is make sure it will have nutrient-rich, healthy soil to live in. Grass thrives in a well-drained mix of topsoil, sand and organic matter several inches deep. When you sow the new seed, rake the soil lightly to ensure the new seed contacts the soil. Then apply a starter fertilizer and water as necessary to prevent the lawn from drying out. Feed with a fertilizer that contains less nitrogen than a spring-season fertilizer, but with high levels of potash.
