The best pie or sour-type cherry! The fruits are sweet with a tart component that gives them a robust flavor. The virtually trouble-free, naturally dwarfed tree grows 10-12 ft. tall, producing heavy yields of large cherries after two years. The crack-resistant fruits are a light red color, with thin skins and red flesh and they're excellent for fresh eating, freezing, making pies, cobblers and preserves. The cherries have a small, free pit and retain their flavor and texture on the tree for up to 2 weeks after ripening. North Star is a very cold-hardy, self-pollinating variety that produces dependable annual yields and has excellent resistance to brown rot and leaf spot. Zones 4-8.
