Tips on Caring for Ornamental Grasses

  1. Proper Watering: Ornamental grasses generally prefer well-drained soil. Water them deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other fungal diseases.
  2. Pruning and Maintenance: Most ornamental grasses benefit from a yearly pruning in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Cut back the dead foliage to a few inches above the ground to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new growth.
  3. Fertilization: While ornamental grasses are relatively low-maintenance, they can benefit from an annual application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. This will provide them with the nutrients they need to thrive and produce lush, healthy foliage.
  4. Division: Over time, ornamental grasses can become crowded, leading to reduced vigor and flowering. Divide large clumps every few years in early spring or fall to maintain plant health and promote better growth and flowering.
  5. Winter Care: While many ornamental grasses are cold-hardy, some may benefit from a layer of mulch applied in late fall to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. However, avoid excessive mulching, as it can trap too much moisture and lead to rot.
