How to Plant Dwarf Tophat Blueberry Plants

The Dwarf Tophat Blueberry plant is a variety that yields round, full-size, firm and flavorful fruit in abundance. Beautiful bell-shaped blooms of whitish-pink color in spring are transformed into blueberries in summer. Dwarf Tophat Blueberry plants are sweet and rich, but have a tart, wild blueberry flavor. Because of the plant’s small size and ease of care, Tophat is a preferred choice when it comes to starting fruit container gardening. Its low height and bonsai-like quality makes it an excellent option for ornamental use. The Dwarf Tophat Blueberry bush plant grows to a height of 1 to 2 feet and spreads upto 1 to 2 feet across.

Dwarf Tophat Blueberry plants prefer well-drained sandy soil with a pH of 4.0 to 4.5. Mixing compost, peat moss, leaf mold or manure helps to enhance the richness of soil. Select containers that can withstand fully grown blueberry plants and have adequate drainage holes. After filling the containers with soil, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the blueberry’s growing container. Add some organic matter into the hole and place the loosened root ball into the planting hole. Fill the hole with the surrounding soil and tamp to eliminate any air pockets.

Water continuously until the soil becomes perfectly moist and damp. 1 to 2 inches of water every week during summer is very essential. Choose a location that receives full sunshine for 6 hours a day in order to place the container with blueberry plant. Use only recommended water-soluble fertilizer for your Dwarf Tophat Blueberry plant. During first three years, prune and dead head the plant as and when required. It takes 3 to 4 years for top hat blueberry bush to mature and start providing juicy blueberry fruits.
